The Malta Drug-Free Powerlifting Association
The Malta Drug-Free Powerlifting Association (MDFPA) was formed around 2007. The MDFPA has since then grown and organised a number of competitions around the island. A maximum of 4 competitions are organised yearly on a national level by the MDFPA. The present Committee is very motivated in keeping this sport alive by encouraging more athletes to take up this strength sport.

The MDFPA is affiliated with the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation (WDFPF) and it is the only Maltese powerlifting organisation recognised by this internal body. Our philosophy is to keep this sport clean while still having strong athletes and that is why we are guided by the World Anti-Doping Association and why we are affiliated with this particular federation. A good number of our athletes are tested throughout the year.

We are proud that national records are commonly broken during competitions as this means that we are continuously improving our standards. The national records are open to various age and weight categories in the full power and single lifts, both unequipped and equipped. A lot of our lifters take pride in competing in WDFPF international competitions abroad and make a good name for our country.

Steve Dutton
President
It is essential to liaise with the General Secretary, the Doping Control Officer and the Public Relations Officer. It’s also great that we all know each other well as this helps us to connect and communicate better for the future of powerlifting in Malta. My role as a President is to visualise how we can improve our beloved sport, and I am sure that together with my team this will be our top priority.
General Segretary
Being a General Secretary entails lots of responsibilities, including the processing of application forms, communicating with the WDFPF Executive Committee, keeping in touch with any amendments of the WDFPF Rulebook, and organising competitions together with my team. I do this because I want our sport to improve from competition to competition and from year to year. There is always something which can be done and which our lifters can benefit from.
Doping Control Officer
My role as a Doping Control Officer is a sensitive one, and it needs to be done with great care and responsibility. I have been trusted with this role for more than 2 years, and there is always research to be done in this area. If we are promoting a drug-free sport, we must make sure that tests are carried out to ensure that everyone is competing fairly. We share the same philosophy with the WDFPF, which is “no drugs, only strong people”. Let your body and mind help you achieve the goals you aim for.

Maria Debono
Public Relations Officer
What interested me in this role as a PRO is the sport itself. It’s a strength sport which a lot of other sports are including in their programmes. I’d like to protect and enhance this sport but moreover our lifters. I believe our lifters are our ambassadors. Let them make a good name for the sport through their hard training and achievements. My role is to actively encourage the lifters, and with the right marketing, I will show what this sport is all about: body strength and mental toughness.
